Lemon Verbena for Muscle Recovery: What the Research Suggests

Muscle recovery is a central part of any training routine, whether the goal is strength, endurance, or general conditioning. Alongside diet, hydration and rest, a growing area of interest is the role of plant-based bioactive compounds — and lemon verbena is one research-informed example currently available. This article examines what the available research says about lemon verbena and muscle recovery, where lemon verbena tea fits into that picture, and what holistic systems of medicine such as Ayurveda suggest about it as a modern plant.

Context: Muscle Recovery After Exercise

Strenuous or unaccustomed exercise — particularly eccentric movement such as downhill running or heavy resistance work — creates microscopic structural stress in muscle fibres. This triggers a cascade of inflammation and oxidative stress, which shows up as soreness, stiffness, reduced strength and a temporary drop in range of motion. Mielgo-Ayuso and Fernández-Lázaro (2021), writing in Nutrients, describe this as a normal physiological response: the body repairs the damage and reduces inflammation over the following days, gradually restoring muscle function.

Two blood markers are commonly used to track this process in research: creatine kinase (CK), an enzyme released when muscle fibres are damaged, and interleukin-6 (IL-6), an inflammatory marker. Both are suggested to rise after exhaustive exercise and fall as recovery progresses — and both are the markers used in the lemon verbena trials discussed below.

The Post-Exercise “Open Window” Period

A related concept in exercise physiology is the “open window” — a period following intense exercise during which immune function is temporarily reduced. Volpe-Fix et al. (2023), in a review published in Foods, note that this window is reported to last from around three to seventy-two hours depending on the exercise parameters involved, and is associated with a higher susceptibility to opportunistic infections, particularly upper respiratory tract infections. This is one reason nutrition and recovery practices around exercise are treated as more than a matter of comfort — they intersect with a temporary vulnerability in immune defence.

It’s worth noting, however, that a consistent daily diet appears to matter more for recovery than any single post-exercise feeding window. Bioactive-compound intake — including from sources like lemon verbena — is best understood as one part of an ongoing pattern rather than a single intervention timed to one moment.

How might Lemon Verbena aid muscle recovery as part of a broader approach? Firstly, Lemon Verbena should not be confused with lemongrass. These are two different plants.

Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora): Background and Compounds

Lemon verbena is a fragrant, South American shrub with a long history of traditional use, dating back to use by the Peruvian Incas and later adoption in European herbal medicine from around the 18th century onward, primarily for digestive complaints, anxiety and sleep. Today it also appears in the sports-nutrition and phytotherapy space, an application that developing modern research is beginning to examine directly.

The plant’s therapeutic reputation is largely attributed to its polyphenol content. The dominant compound is verbascoside (also known as acteoside), a phenylpropanoid glycoside with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, alongside smaller amounts of related flavonoids including luteolin and apigenin derivatives. These are distinct from the aromatic terpenes — such as citral, limonene and geraniol — that give the leaf its lemon scent; the terpenes are responsible for lemon verbena’s characteristic aroma and have traditionally been associated with digestive and calming effects, but they are not the compounds evaluated in the muscle-recovery trials below.

What the Research Suggests

Two randomised, placebo-controlled in vivo trials have specifically examined a standardised lemon verbena extract in the context of exhaustive exercise.

Buchwald-Werner et al. (2018)

This double-blind trial enrolled 44 healthy, moderately active men and women aged 22–50 and randomised them to either 400 mg/day of a proprietary lemon verbena extract (Recoverben®) or a placebo, taken for 15 days before an exhaustive exercise test. The extract group experienced a smaller drop in muscle strength after exercise — an 11% reduction compared with 21% in the placebo group — and reported less muscle soreness and fatigue. The authors’ overall observation was that lemon verbena extract appeared to be a safe, well-tolerated ingredient associated with reduced muscle strength loss and indications of faster recovery, an effect they attributed to the extract’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant polyphenol content.

Lee et al. (2021)

A larger double-blind trial published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences examined a different standardised lemon verbena extract (Planox®) in 60 subjects (30 men, 30 women), supplemented at 400 mg/day for 10 days before an exhaustive countermovement-jump protocol. Compared with placebo, the extract group showed significantly lower creatine kinase at 3, 24 and 48 hours post-exercise, lower IL-6 at 48 hours, higher glutathione peroxidase (an antioxidant enzyme) at 3 and 48 hours, and significantly lower urinary 8-OHdG — a marker of oxidative DNA damage — at 24 hours. Subjective and objective pain scores (VAS) were also lower in the extract group across the following three days. Notably, the study found no significant effect on measures of muscle strength or jumping power itself, indicating that the benefit observed related more to reduced biochemical damage and perceived soreness than to restored force output. The authors describe this as an area that needs further exploration.

Taken together, these two independent trials — using two different proprietary extracts, in two different populations — point in a broadly consistent direction: supplementation with a standardised lemon verbena extract is associated with reduced markers of exercise-induced muscle damage and oxidative stress, and with lower perceived soreness, even where effects on raw strength recovery are less consistent.

What Tea Is Good for Muscle Recovery? Where Lemon Verbena Fits In

Lemon verbena is one of the more commonly suggested options when people ask what tea is good for muscle recovery, and its traditional and phytochemical profile makes that a reasonable question to explore. There is an important distinction worth being clear about, though: both trials above used standardised capsule extracts at a fixed 400 mg/day dose of concentrated polyphenols — not brewed leaf tea. Therefore, lemon verbena tea itself on muscle-recovery biomarkers, and the polyphenol concentration in a cup of tea may be lower and less standardised than in an extract capsule.

That doesn’t rule out lemon verbena tea as a useful part of a recovery-supportive routine — it contributes to hydration, has a long traditional association with digestive and calming use, and contains the same underlying polyphenol family studied in the extract trials, perhaps at a lower and more variable concentration. It is best understood as a complementary habit within a broader recovery routine, rather than as a direct substitute for the extract doses.

Preparing Lemon Verbena Tea

  • Use freshly boiled water and 1–2 tsp of dried lemon verbena leaves per cup.
  • Steep for 3–5 minutes in a strainer or infuser, adjusting time to taste.
  • Choose leaves from a source free of chemical pesticide residues.
  • Can be drunk at any time of day; individual suitability should be considered, particularly for those who are pregnant or managing a chronic health condition.

A Wider View: Diet, Bioavailability and Natural Sources

Jaime and Santoyo (2021), reviewing the health benefits of bioactive food compounds in Foods, note that the body’s response to natural compounds depends heavily on digestion, intestinal absorption and bioavailability — factors shaped by how a food or extract is prepared and consumed, not simply by which compounds it contains on paper. This is a useful frame for lemon verbena specifically: the same plant can be encountered as a concentrated, standardised extract or as a comparatively dilute tea, and the research to date speaks most directly to the former.

It’s also worth situating lemon verbena within a wider field. Traditional systems such as Ayurveda and Chinese medicine have long incorporated plant-based approaches to recovery and inflammation, and other botanicals — turmeric (curcumin), ginger (gingerol) and ashwagandha, among others — appear regularly in this same conversation around recovery-supportive nutrition. Lemon verbena is not unique in this respect; it is one option within a broader, still-developing area of connecting plant bioactives to post-exercise physiology.
